In Division One, perenial powerhouses Euless Trinity take on RR Stony Point in one Semi, while Katy Cinco Ranch take on Austin Westlake. The winners will square off in the State Championship decider.

Division Two sees a return to power of Abiline Eagles who play Klein in what should be an absorbing battle and last years State Champs Katy play New Branfels.

It is great to see some new teams progress to semi stage, the return of Abiline and the continuing power behind Katy and Trinity.

District 2 OUT in Week 2

The two Arlington Teams, in Arlington Martin and Arlington accounted for the two Odeesa Teams, the Broncos and the Permian Panthers in week 2 of the Playoffs in Texas 5A High school Football.

Arlington accounted for the Bronchos 70-42 while Arlington Martin disposed of the Panthers 25-15.

Odessa Teams Progress for District 2

In the District 1 v District showdown in the Texas High School Football play-offs, the honours were shared evenly with D1 winning through EP (El Paso) Coronado and EP Montwood, who knocked out Midland Lee and Amarillo, while the two Odessa Teams in the Odessa Bronchos and the Permian Panthers flew the flag for District 2 in their wins over EP Franklin and EP El Dorado

Permian head into the Playoffs

After a dodgy start to the season, the Permian Panthers have ended their District 2 season with a 7-2 record and head into the State Playoffs from November 14.

MOJO opened the scoring with a nice 70 yard drive that ended with Tommey Morris bulling his way in from one yard out. Monterey answered with a trick play to take a 7-6 first quarter lead. But the Panthers quelled the Plainsmen hopes in the second quarter, as Tommey Morris scored on a three yard run. On the next Panthers possession, Steven Pipes hit Felix Neboh for a 63 yard catch and run touchdown. MOJO went into the break with a 21-7 lead.

The second half was more of the same for MOJO, with Pipes hitting Talon Smith for an eight yard touchdown pass. Monterey answered with a seven yard touchdown run to make it 27-14, but that was as close as it would get. DeAnthony Fay scored on a 13 yard touchdown scamper, and Tommey Morris rushed for his third touchdown of the game to end the scoring.

The Permian offense had their best outing so far, rolling up 445 total yards. Steven Pipes passed for 216 yards and two TDs. Felix Neboh broke the 100 yard mark receiving, with four catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Tommey Morris grabbed three passes for 45 yards, and scored three times on the ground. DeAnthony Fay got his first 100 yard game as a Panther, gaining 101 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. NEXT UP- The Panthers travel to Amarillo to face the Sandies, September 18th at *** Bivens Stadium.

A Win for Permian

After a disapointing first week of the season, and after having their Friday Night game postponed untl Saturday afternoon, the Permian Panthers came away with a 28-6 win over the San Antonio Central Bobcats.

The first half showcased similar form for the young Panthers as they exhibited last week, but the second half saw the Panther machine find some gears and swing into a win. Described by their loyal fans as a win, but certainly not a pretty win. The second half was a better indication of the season ahead, but improvement will be needed to match the their recent history over the last three seasons.

MOJO STUMBLES IN SEASON OPENER

August 29th- The Permian Panthers started out strong in their season opener vs Duncanville, but then some very un-MOJO like play spelled their doom as Duncanville capitalized on six Permian turnovers to score a 33-14 victory. The Panthers began the game with a nice 77 yard drive capped off by DeAnthony Fay's one yard run. Duncanville settled for a field goal after a Permian defensive stand. From there the game started to go downhill for MOJO, as the first of two fumbles on consecutive drives killed momentum. Duncanville got two more field goals to take a 9-7 halftime lead.

MOJO began the second half much like the first, with Steven Pipes finishing a 47 yard drive with a nice 19 yard TD scramble. It would be all Duncanville after that, as Stephon Lanigan stepped in front of a Pipes pass and returned it 91 yards for a score. Duncanville would return another interception for six points before the evening was over.

The loss snaps a 22 game regular-season winning streak. MOJO will try to get back on track in San Angelo vs the Central Bobcats in the 2-5A district opener, 7:30pm September 4th.

THE SEASON BEGINS IN SAN ANTONIO
The 2009 season begins Saturday, August 29th in San Antonio’s AlamoDome vs the Duncanville Panthers. Duncanville returns four offensive and three defensive starters from a 6-5 playoff team (5-1 in District 7-5A). Leading the way for Duncanville is quarterback Divian Ealy. The junior signal caller took over in midseason and did a fine job, passing for 1,163 yards and 14 touchdowns. Ealy is also a threat on the ground when not handing off to returning starter Zavian Handy (5’6” 160# 4.4). Handy rushed for 758 yards and eight TDs on 94 carries. Most of the receiving corps graduated, but 6’2” 180# sophomore Jeff Thomas provides a big target in the passing game. Defensively, Duncanville is led by defensive tackle Tevin Moore (5’11” 255# 5.0). Cornerback Estean Freeman (5’10” 160# 4.5) heads up a speedy secondary. Head Coach Jeff Dicus is in his second year at Duncanville.

Back to The Future is the theme for MOJO in 2009, as legendary coach Gary Gaines returns to the sidelines. Gaines previously coached at Permian from 1986-1989, compiling a 46-7-1 record including a state and mythical national title in 1989. Gaines will lead a Panther squad short on experience but deep with talent and potential. Taking over the quarterback duties is Steven Pipes. The 6’1” 178# senior did well in backup duty last season, completing 73% of his passes for one touchdown. Pipes can also do damage on the ground. Junior DeAnthony Fay steps into the role of starting running back. Fay gained 309 total yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore. Eli Torres returns as H-Back and will also see time at the RB position as will junior Greg George. At receiver, seniors Felix Neboh, Alfonso Zubiate and Josh Tarin join a talented group of up and coming juniors including Tommey Morris, Talon Smith, and Gordon Palmer. Keenan Mosby will man the TE slot. The offensive line will once again be a strength of the team with returning All State players Austin O’Connell and Margarito Vasquez leading the way. Aaron Voss, who saw a lot of playing time last season, will join Zach Fox and Eric Bilbrey as probable starters. Taylor Martin returns to handle field goal and extra point duties.

Permian has been stellar on the offensive side of the ball as of late. But with a premium placed on speed, the mean and mobile MOJO defense may be where the team really makes noise this season. Three of the four defensive backfield positions will be manned by experienced players, including hard-hitting safety Brennan Welch. Welch led the team with four interceptions, and added 76 tackles last season. Colby Pyron and Richard Murry return at safety and cornerback, respectively. Expect junior Jelan Loud to see time at safety as well. Thomas Munoz and Rueben Johnson will vie for playing time at the other corner. The linebacking corps is solid, led by inside backers Lambert Riley (6’ 0” 220#) and Santiago Leija. Cole Thomas mans the Quick linebacker slot, with KeJordan Washington and Tra Fay rotating at the Buck position. Matt Rice will also be in the mix. On the defensive line Denzell Rogers (6' 1" 230#) and Jesse Baeza (5'11" 225#) play the ends, with senior Colby Koenig manning the nose. Junior Shaquille Johnson and sophomore Haesten Wood will be part of the rotation up front.

Last season, the Panthers kicked off an undefeated regular season with a 28-22 win over Duncanville. Expect more of the same this Saturday in San Antonio. The game is part of the Dave Campbell's Texas Football Classic, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 pm. KMCM 96.9 FM will handle radio and netcast duties. Live updates are also available on Facebook and Twitter. Congratulations to all four teams.

The Road ends at Reliance

The end of the Road to Reliance Stadium for the 5A Texas High School State Championships ends this weekend as four teams become two in the two divisions of the 5A Titles.

In Division One, Permian Panthers coquerers the Allen Eagles have slipped into the State Title Fight by defeating Stony Point 23-21 in a tight one. They will play FB Hightower who whipped SA Clark 28-7. On form the Eagles are entitled to go in favourites for the Title

Division Two will see Katy take on Wylie for the title after Wylie beat Copperas Cove 23-7 while Katy flexed its muscle against Smithson Valley 41-19.

Allen Knocks over Trinity

For the last two seasons, the team that has knocked over the Permian Panthers has gone on to win State. 2007 saw Euless Trinity beat Permian in the third round of the playoffs and the year before it was Southlake Carroll. This year we saw Allen beat Permian, again in Round 3, and then faced defending champs Euless Trinity in Round 4.

This year we saw Allen defeat Trinity 32-21 and advance to the semi-finals and Region 1 champs. Without doubt, Region 1 is the strongest Region and at times 15 teams from this region has accounted for the Top 25 State Rankings. It is common for the winner of Region 1 to take the title, and it would seem the case again this year.

In Division 1, we see Allen take on Stony Point for a place in the final, while FB Hightower take on SA Clark for the other spot. Division 2 sees Wylie take on Copperas Cove to fight for a position against the winner of Katy and Smithson Valley.

A final throw of the dice, with just minutes on the clock, missed getting a 1st down by just 2 minutes.

The Permian defence struggled to hold the Allen offence with the Allen passing game leaving Permian grasping at the attackers. The Panthers offece stuttered early with incompletes and dropped ball giving Allen field position and possession. A brave second half comeback just didn't breach the gap. Sherard Ray was the outstanding pler onthe field, single handedly dragging Permian back into the game.

A 12-1 season for the Panthers who again have reached the third round of the playoffs for the second consequtive year.
